Please join the Grassroots Gardens Fall 5K, 10K, and 15K running event! Three distances being offered feature beautiful and scenic views of the upper Niagara River. The 15K is an out-and-back course that runs from LaSalle Waterfront Park to Goat Island and Niagara Falls!

Join the Massachusetts Avenue Project, Grassroots Gardens of WNY and Urban Roots for the third and final class in our Fall Workshop Series where we will be preparing our minds and spirits for the winter, making potpourri, and making herb butter.

The Tool Library’s Fall Service Days are an opportunity to transform the spaces we share into the places we love. We put our tools to work through large-scale community projects such as neighborhood clean-ups, tree plantings, community gardens, and public art installations.

Enjoy the last gifts of the garden with us and fortify ourselves for the winter. Together, we'll cook a huge pot of squash soup on the camp stove and pop our popping corn. Please bring an empty stomach or a dish to share.
If you do not cook, consider bringing jugs of cider, cups (hot/cold), napkins, utensils or donate your time to help setup.

Tree planting training by Re-Tree WNY, a program of the Buffalo Green Fund. Free and open to anyone. Volunteers that are planting on November 4, 2023 must attend (unless they trained with us previously at our bare root tree sessions). At least one member of a group must attend.

Have you ever wondered what goes on in the tiny world of mosses? In this workshop, we will be learning and discussing the basics of moss, including their environment, structure, and types of moss that you would find growing in Western New York. You will then construct your very own moss terrarium, complete with small decorations of your choice. We will go over moss maintenance, and you will be on your way with your own tiny moss world!

Create a beautiful autumnal arrangement to celebrate the highlights of the season during this floral design workshop. Fresh materials and design bowl are provided. Bring hand clippers and a box for transporting your arrangement. This onsite class will be held on the Botanical Gardens campus.

Are you a houseplant lover? Looking to add more greenery to your home? Discover the basics of houseplant care and cultivation in this fun class. Topics include common houseplants, potting techniques and media, pest control, lighting, fertilization and more. Whether you are brand new to houseplants or you already have a home collection, this class will provide you with the knowledge needed to keep your green friends happy and healthy!

Join the Massachusetts Avenue Project, Grassroots Gardens of Western NY and Urban Roots in the second class of our free Fall Gardening Series; Community Homesteading, process Fire Cider and Elderberry syrup, learn seed saving basics, how to store crops for winter, and food foraging walk around our neighborhood.

Sample honeys from around the country and learn how we harvest a few frames of honey. We will be employing the equipment inside a screened tent so that fewer bees will engage with us while we're working but be aware that there will be many bees (and probably yellow jackets) attracted and curious about what we're up to. It is a good idea to wear long sleeve shirt and pants and avoid sweet/floral perfumes.

Do you want to see more birds in your backyard? This workshop will help you identify some of the birds that are most likely to be seen in our area and discuss ways to attract birds into your space. Topics will include gardening for birds, types of bird feeders, and varieties of food that can be offered.  You will also create a simple feeder to take home for your backyard feathered friends. This class is perfect for beginning birders or anyone who’d like to learn more about our local birds.  

Learn how to create fun and vibrant art work with invasive species! Artist Tatiana will use invasive species from the Buffalo Olmsted Park System to demonstrate how you can create ink! This event is a partnership with The Tool Library and Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy.

The Children’s Harvest Garden Festival is a family-friendly event that will encourage children to eat healthful foods, offer several forms of outdoor exercise, and provide opportunities to learn about planting bulbs, composting, fall fruits and vegetables and how to take care of a garden in the fall, all of which can relieve stress and bring families and neighbors together.

Explore linocut printmaking! Use carving tools to create your own unique linoleum print block and artwork. Discover this century old process while drawing inspiration from the beautiful plant collection. Participants will be guided through the entire process of sketching, carving, and printing. All supplies are included. 

Learn how to preserve the bounty of your garden for the following year! Seed saving is the practice of harvesting seeds in the fall and storing them to plant the following spring. In this class, we will discuss seed saving basics such as what plants are best for seed saving, how and when to harvest, as well as proper seed storage techniques.

Curious about bonsai but don’t know where to start? This bonsai demonstration is the perfect introduction for beginners. Topics include bonsai basics, different styles of bonsai, how to care for and maintain a bonsai, as well as a demonstration on how to design a bonsai.

Mary Kruszka will teach you how to design a gorgeous fall succulent pumpkin centerpiece that will last for months. You'll be using a variety of  succulent cuttings and dried flowers to create your very own seasonal piece.
